Bee Inspections

Bee Inspections is a focused mobile app for recording hive inspections where they actually happen, at the apiary. It keeps things practical you follow a clear checklist, note what you see, and save the result without extra admin. The free version lets you complete inspections and email the report to yourself, your mentor, or your club so nothing gets lost. The premium version stores inspections in the app for future reference and streamlines repeat visits.

The story

From brief to launch

Three chapters that shaped how this project came together.

01
Brief

Project Idea

Beekeepers need consistent notes to track changes across weeks and seasons, but paper sheets get wet or lost and typing things up later rarely happens. We set out to put a tidy, guided checklist on the phone, one that keeps you moving, asks the right questions at the right time, and produces a record you will actually use. For beginners and small setups, emailing the result is enough itโ€™s portable, shareable, and archived in your inbox. For growing apiaries, premium in-app storage keeps a clean timeline of visits and makes repeat inspections quicker by reducing steps and carrying context from the last check. The goal was to reduce friction so good records become part of the routine, not a separate chore.

02
Build

Development

We built the app with React Native so iOS and Android share one codebase and behave the same in the field. Firebase handles sign-in, secure sync, and lightweight updates, while MongoDB stores inspection records in a flexible format that matches real-world variability from hive to hive. The checklist engine is remote-configurable, so items can be refined without a full app release. The interface favors plain language, large touch targets, and short, linear flows so most actions take a few taps and feel natural with one hand. Reports render in a simple, readable layout that works well when emailed (free) or reviewed later inside the app (premium). We also paid attention to stability and responsiveness so the app stays usable even when coverage is weak around the yard.

03
Outcome

The Solution

The result is a tool that fits the way beekeepers actually work. In the free version, you run through a guided checklist, record your observations, and email the inspection so it is saved and shareable right away. In the premium version, inspections are stored in the app for quick lookup and comparison, and the flow is streamlined for repeat visits, less tapping, quicker entries, and helpful carry-over context from previous checks. This balance keeps the app approachable for new keepers and efficient for busy operations, making it easier to spot trends, make timely decisions, and keep colonies healthier over time.
