Stir

Stir is a dating app created specifically for single parents, a group often overlooked by traditional dating platforms. Recognizing the unique challenges single parents face when balancing family, time, and romance, Stir offers a space where users can connect with others who share similar life experiences. Unlike general dating apps, Stir understands that having kids isn’t a deal-breaker, it’s part of the story. With family-first features and intuitive tools, Stir empowers single parents to build meaningful relationships with people who truly understand their journey.

The story

From brief to launch

Three chapters that shaped how this project came together.

01
Brief

Project Idea

The idea behind Stir was born from a gap in the online dating space. Most platforms cater to general audiences, often ignoring the real-life complexities single parents deal with, from tight schedules to shared custody. Stir sought to create a dedicated, judgment-free zone where these realities weren’t just accepted but celebrated. The app helps users match based on shared values and lifestyle compatibility, with features designed to remove the awkwardness of explaining parenting status and availability. The result is a safe, understanding space where users can connect with confidence.

02
Build

Development

Stir was built with a mobile-first approach, using Swift for iOS development and Kotlin for Android to ensure native-level performance and seamless responsiveness. The backend is powered by Golang, chosen for its performance and concurrency capabilities, especially for managing real-time features like messaging, matching, and notifications. The development team implemented a custom-built matching algorithm that prioritizes user compatibility based on lifestyle details, not just surface-level preferences. User onboarding includes thoughtful profile-building options, like specifying kids’ schedules, which the algorithm uses to align users with similar routines and expectations. Extensive user testing was conducted to ensure features like photo uploads, profile prompts, and date-planning tools were intuitive and supportive of users’ needs. The app’s infrastructure is designed to scale and maintain reliability during peak usage, using AWS Cloud Services, MongoDB, and Firebase for real-time interactions and analytics.

03
Outcome

The Solution

Stir delivers a refreshing take on dating by putting single parents first. The platform is designed with empathy, understanding that single parents need flexibility, transparency, and a partner who “gets it.” From the moment users join, the app tailors the experience around their lifestyle. Custom profile prompts, flexible availability indicators, and shared parenting insights allow users to present their true selves without judgment. Stir’s design, tone, and functionality encourage real conversations, emotional intelligence, and relationship-building grounded in mutual understanding. With no pressure to hide their parenting identity, users can confidently navigate dating on their own terms, supported, not stigmatized.
