Sckat

Sckat is an Android social-discovery app built around one simple idea, make meeting people nearby feel less forced. Users build an honest profile, send and receive Waves to people in their area, match, chat, and share Stories that keep them visible to the community around them. Instead of trying to be everywhere at once, Sckat focuses on the few people who happen to be close right now and gives them a low-pressure way to start a real conversation.

The story

From brief to launch

Three chapters that shaped how this project came together.

01
Brief

Project Idea

Amsterdam-based Manifex B.V. wanted to launch a social-discovery app that didn't feel like every other dating product on the market. The big platforms had become overwhelming, performative, and exhausting. Users wanted somewhere lighter, a way to meet someone nearby, without the gamification, without the endless swiping, and without the pressure of matching being a transaction. The brief asked us to build an Android app with location at its core, but in a way that felt like walking into a neighbourhood café rather than browsing a feed of strangers. The product needed honest profiles, low-pressure first contact, real chat, and a safety model the team could stand behind from day one.

02
Build

Development

Sckat has launched with the feel its founders wanted, light, local, and spontaneous. Users build honest profiles, see real people nearby, send a Wave when they're curious, and ease into a conversation when there's mutual interest. The Stories surface keeps the community visible without pulling people into a doomscroll, and the safety stack has kept the early community trustworthy as it grows. For Manifex, Sckat is a launchpad a clean, modern social product with a clear point of view in a market crowded with sameness, and a technical foundation that can scale region by region without losing its hyperlocal feel.

03
Outcome

The Solution

We built Sckat as a modern, native-feel Android app with a location-first architecture. The backend uses geospatial indexing in MongoDB to surface nearby users efficiently, and the matching engine is tuned to favour fresh, local activity over deep historical scoring, meaning users always see people who are actually around, not stale profiles from across the city. The Waves feature is intentionally lightweight it lets someone signal interest without committing to a full chat, which lowers the social cost of making the first move. Stories give users a way to stay visible without forcing them back into a feed, and the chat layer is built for short, natural exchanges rather than long-form interaction. We invested heavily in moderation, reporting, and blocking from day one, including image moderation pipelines, a privacy-conscious data model, and an internal admin tool for the trust and safety team.
